New: our own Hairmetry line. Every ingredient explained

Topic

Hair density

Density is how many hairs grow per square centimetre of scalp; it varies with ancestry, scalp site and age, and on its own it says little about hair loss.

Key takeaways

  • Density means hairs per square centimetre of scalp. Healthy adults usually fall between about 130 and 300 hairs/cm2, depending on ancestry, scalp site, age and how it is measured Birnbaum 2018, Leerunyakul 2020, Birch 2001.
  • Ancestry matters. In one New York trichoscopy study, adults of European ancestry averaged about 214-230/cm2, Hispanic adults 169-178 and adults of African descent 148-160 Birnbaum 2018. Thai adults measured 134-163/cm2 Leerunyakul 2020. East Asian hair makes up for lower density with thicker strands Loussouarn 2016.
  • Hairs grow in follicular units of 1-4 hairs. Hair-transplant patients' donor areas carried about 61-85 units/cm2 with roughly 1.8-2.4 hairs per unit Jimenez 1999, Ortega-Castillejos 2017 (hairs-per-unit figures are our arithmetic).
  • Density falls with age. In 377 UK women it averaged 293/cm2 at age 35 and 211/cm2 at age 70 Birch 2001. In Japanese women the drop after 40 came from units losing hairs, with more single-hair units and fewer units of three or more Tajima 2007.
  • Fullness is roughly density multiplied by strand thickness. A combined "hair amount" measure tracked women's perceptions better than either alone Robbins 2012. Clinics measure the same idea as a Hair Mass Index Cohen 2008, Hendriks 2012.
  • A one-off density number cannot diagnose hair loss. Most women with female pattern hair loss still had densities inside the normal range, in its lower half Birch 2001. In Japanese men aged 25 or older, early pattern loss showed up as thinner strands rather than fewer hairs Ishino 2014. The trend, and how the front and crown compare with the back, matter more.
  • Density differs around the head. The temples have the fewest hairs Leerunyakul 2020, Rutnin 2022, so compare the same spot over time.
  • Home density checks are rough and unvalidated. Scalp show-through, part width and ponytail size depend on lighting, hair color, curl and length. Use them to track change in yourself, not to compare with others.
  • Genetics are being mapped. A 2025 study of 5,735 East Asian adults found three DNA regions linked to follicular-unit density (near SPRY1, RSPO1 and NRP2); age, sex, BMI and menopause were also associated Qian 2025.

Terms

  • Density: total hairs (or follicles) per cm2. The figure depends on what was counted: follicles in a biopsy, including tiny and resting ones, or visible shafts in a trichoscope field.
  • Follicular unit: a natural group of 1-4 hairs emerging together Jimenez 1999.
  • Terminal versus vellus: full-size hairs versus tiny, fine ones. Their ratio falls in pattern hair loss Messenger and Sinclair 2006. See the hair growth cycle and strand thickness.
  • Hair mass: the total cross-sectional area of hair per area of scalp, combining density and diameter Cohen 2008, Wikramanayake 2012.

Biopsy conversions to per cm2 are our arithmetic (a 4-mm punch covers about 0.126 cm2). Methods are not interchangeable: biopsies count every follicle, phototrichograms count shaved hairs in a marked window, and trichoscopy counts visible shafts in a small field and is less accurate than the others, though fast and reliable Birnbaum 2018. Compare numbers only within one method.

Follicular units

  • Spanish transplant patients (n=50): 65-85 units/cm2 and 124-200 hairs/cm2 in the donor area Jimenez 1999.
  • Asian men with pattern loss (n=70): about 61-64 units/cm2 and 111-127 hairs/cm2 depending on region Ortega-Castillejos 2017.
  • Trichoscopy norms for healthy white women: fewer than 35% single-hair units at the front, 30% at the back and 40% at the temples. A higher share at the front than the back is a minor sign of female pattern hair loss Rakowska 2009, Rakowska 2009b.

Site differences

  • Thai adults had the lowest density at the temples, with the vertex and back highest and similar Leerunyakul 2020. Biopsies from 60 Thai cadavers also showed the temples lowest Rutnin 2022.
  • Egyptian women had their highest density at the front Moneib 2022, and African adults at the vertex Loussouarn 2001.
  • In healthy children aged 4-10, vertex density was about the same as back-of-head density (ratio 1.07; range 0.73-1.41). The authors propose that a lower ratio in adults signals pattern loss Rebora 2016.

Change with age

  • UK women: 293/cm2 at 35 versus 211/cm2 at 70 Birch 2001.
  • Caucasian women: density was highest at ages 20-30 and then fell at an increasing rate, faster in women who felt they were losing hair Robbins 2012 (industry).
  • Thai adults: density fell about 9-10 hairs/cm2 (about 6%) between the 20s and 60s, but only the 60s group (18 people) differed significantly Leerunyakul 2020.
  • Japanese men without pattern loss under 25 had higher density than those 25 and older Ishino 2014.
  • In men followed for years, the gap between losing a hair and regrowing it lengthened with age, so fewer hairs are present at any moment Courtois 1995.

Density, thickness and perceived fullness

  • Thickening strands masked falling density until the mid-30s; after that the combined hair amount fell, and thinning became noticeable from the mid-40s to the late 50s Robbins 2012.
  • Low density was the main driver of perceived hair loss in women; diameter explained some of the overlap between women classed as early-stage and women with no hair loss Birch 2001.
  • Worked example (our arithmetic, illustrative): 200 hairs/cm2 at 70 micrometres gives about 0.77 mm2 of hair per cm2 of scalp, and 150 hairs/cm2 at 80 micrometres gives about 0.75 mm2. A lower-density head with thicker strands can look as full as a higher-density head with finer strands.
  • Women's own idea of "fine hair" combines density, strand thickness, strength and overall volume Bouabbache 2016.

Density and hair loss

  • In women with female pattern hair loss, total follicles fell from 317/cm2 (grade 1) to 243/cm2 (grade 5), while terminal follicles fell much more, from 263 to 96 Messenger and Sinclair 2006. Miniaturization comes first; follicles disappear later.
  • In men, biopsy-confirmed pattern loss showed fewer terminal and more vellus hairs, and the number of follicular structures per mm2 predicted response to minoxidil Whiting 1993. See hair loss scales and androgenetic alopecia.

How density is measured

  • Clinic and research methods include phototrichograms Loussouarn 2001, trichoscopy with software Birnbaum 2018, horizontal biopsy sections Headington 1984, Whiting 1993, and cross-section trichometry, which squeezes a bundle of hair from a marked patch and measures its area. The commercial version gave the same reading on repeat measurements (r = 0.97-0.99) and took 5-10 minutes per area Hendriks 2012, Wikramanayake 2012. A European expert guidance also lists a black-and-white felt examination Pierard 2004.
  • At home, none of these is validated. We found no study comparing scalp-visibility ratings, part-width checks or ponytail circumference against measured density. These signals mix density with strand thickness, length, curl and color, and ponytail size also reflects breakage. They are useful only for following yourself over time under the same conditions. See hair loss scales and taking a good hair photo.

What it means for your hair

  • Low density with fine strands has the lowest hair mass. Hair looks flat and early pattern loss becomes visible soonest. Volume-building styling and watching for change help most.
  • Low density with thick strands is typical of many East Asian heads. Hair mass can be similar to higher-density, finer hair Leerunyakul and Suchonwanit 2020.
  • Curly and coily hair: lower average density in people of African ancestry Birnbaum 2018, Loussouarn 2001 does not necessarily mean less apparent volume. Coils probably occupy more space and hide the scalp; that is our inference, not a measurement. Density judgments from photos of curly hair are unreliable (see curl pattern).
  • Judge thinning against your own back-of-head hair and your own past, not other people. The back of the scalp is usually spared by pattern loss Rebora 2016, Rakowska 2009b.

Myths and facts

  • "Everyone has about 100,000 hairs." A textbook estimate. Density ranges about 130-300/cm2 by ancestry, site and age Natarelli 2023, Birnbaum 2018.
  • "Thin-looking hair means you have few hairs." Strand thickness counts as much; hair mass is density times diameter Robbins 2012, Cohen 2008.
  • "East Asians have thick hair, so they have more hair." They have thicker strands but fewer hairs per cm2 than Europeans Lee 2002, Leerunyakul 2020.
  • "My density is normal, so I can't have pattern hair loss." Most women with pattern loss have densities within the normal range Birch 2001.
  • "Balding means hairs fall out and never come back." Early on, hairs mostly get finer and shorter-lived; follicles disappear only in advanced stages Ishino 2014, Messenger and Sinclair 2006.
  • "Seeing scalp means you're thinning." Show-through depends on density, thickness, curl, length, color contrast and lighting, and normal density varies widely.

Practical points

  1. Compare yourself with people of similar ancestry, and with your own past: a wider part, a smaller ponytail or more scalp on show than 1-2 years ago is the signal that matters.
  2. To track at home, photograph the same parts of the head (front hairline, central part, crown, back) in the same light with clean, dry, unstyled hair every 3-6 months. See taking a good hair photo.
  3. If the front or crown is clearly thinning compared with the back, or a part keeps widening, see a dermatologist. Clinic tools can measure what home methods cannot.
  4. Do not compare density numbers from different apps or devices.

Bottom line

Density varies widely between healthy people, so a single number tells you little. What counts is the change over time, the front and crown compared with the back, and how density combines with strand thickness. Most large datasets are small or from one company, and home methods have never been validated.
