A standard or lightly clarifying shampoo, lathered on the scalp
Do this
- Lather the shampoo on your scalp only
- Use a standard or lightly clarifying shampoo
Why: Oil runs down straight hair fast, so a shampoo that cleans oil well keeps it fresh. Washing does not make you greasier.

The basics
What most people get wrong
Washing, drying, conditioning. Simple things, with real numbers behind them.
-
WASHING
2-3 days
Scalp oil returns to its normal level this long after shampooing, the same pattern in all 7 groups tested (1,325 people).
-
DRYING
About half
Wet hair fibres were about half as stiff as dry ones. Lab test on cut hair from one batch.
-
CONDITIONER
100% to under 10%
Chance of a damaging snag when combing wet bleached hair fell from 100% to under 10% with conditioner (lab hair bundles).
-
HEAT STYLING
237 C
Hair protein (keratin) loses its structure at about this temperature. Gases appear from 200 C. Lab test, 3 hair bundles.
-
DETANGLING
480 strokes
On afro hair, 480 combing strokes damaged the outer layer (cuticle) more than frequent braiding. Damage rose steadily with strokes.
-
SLEEP
31.7%
Of women in a South African survey had traction alopecia (hair loss from pulling). Relaxed hair plus pulling raised the odds 3.5 times.

The niche science, made simple

Men with pattern baldness had more scalp fat and one more yeast
In 118 Japanese men, those with pattern hair loss had more sebum triglyceride, palmitic acid and Malassezia restricta. It is only a link, written by drug-company staff, and cause is unknown.

Washing weekly with ketoconazole shampoo cut dandruff relapse from 47% to 19%

Hair-root cells in a dish mostly made the enzyme finasteride barely blocks
Hair-root cells grown from beard and scalp made mostly type 1 5-alpha-reductase (a DHT-making enzyme), most in the beard. A type 1 blocker beat finasteride in beard cells. Dish study; tissue studies disagree.

Untreated men lost about a quarter of their hair in five years
In the placebo group of the main finasteride trials, men lost about 239 hairs (26.3% of density) in the studied scalp patch over five years, and 75% looked worse in photos.

One minute of bleach nearly tripled hair's inner surface
Gas measurements showed that bleach made many tiny pores in hair within the first minute, nearly tripling its internal surface area. After 10 minutes these merged into bigger pores. Lab test on hair fibres.

Some people grow coarse kinky hairs after puberty
Six people developed kinked, coarse hairs after puberty at the front, temples and crown, the same places where pattern baldness starts. The authors think hormones (androgens) drive it. A small case report, not a controlled study.

Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No ads, no affiliate links, no account. Your results live in a link you can save or share.
Where does the advice come from?
From published studies. Every step, guide and ingredient links to the paper behind it, and we say when the evidence is thin, only in a lab, or paid for by a company.
What happens to my photo?
It is analysed in memory on our own server and deleted straight away. It only suggests your hair type; you confirm every answer.
Can you buy the Hairmetry products?
Not yet. Hairmetry, our own line, is in development. The pages show what goes in each formula and why.
Is this medical advice?
No. It is educational information. For hair loss or scalp problems, talk to a doctor or dermatologist.
