Why it works

Curl Gel, ingredients
  • Polyacrylate-2 crosspolymer (curl-hold polymer)studied at 3% polymer solids in a gel

How well this polymer's film grips hair and holds together sets how well curls keep their shape in humid air.

    Study 1 ↗

  • Aminomethyl propanol (sets the film)

Turns the polymer into a gel. Gels made with it held curls in 90% humidity as well as sodium hydroxide gels, and better than triethanolamine gels.

    Study 1 ↗

  • Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)

A small molecule that enters hair and probably binds to its protein. It raised break stress and stiffness.

    Study 1 ↗Study 2 ↗

  • Flaxseed extract

Flax gum is a water-binding, gel-forming sugar polymer, here for the gel-like feel.

How to use it

Curl Gel, texture
  1. 1On soaking-wet hair, after the Curl Cream, smooth through in sections.
  2. 2Scrunch upward, then leave it alone until fully dry.
  3. 3Scrunch out the cast once your hair is dry.

What we leave out, and why

  • FragranceA leading cause of contact allergy
  • Essential oilsNatural, but a known skin allergen
  • MI/MCIPreservatives behind an allergy rise in Europe
  • Formaldehyde releasersSlowly release formaldehyde, a skin allergen
  • Zinc pyrithioneBanned in EU cosmetics since 2022
  • Drying alcoholCan dry out a sensitive scalp
  • Coal tarIrritating, and a non-tar shampoo did as well
  • MDBGNBanned in the EU after allergies kept rising

Frequently asked

Does the gel replace the Curl Cream?

No. The Curl Cream comes first and does the defining. The gel goes on top for hold and frizz control.

Will it hold in humid weather?

It is built on a polymer whose gels held spiral curls in 90% humidity for hours.

Wade Rafferty 2008 ↗Gao 2007 ↗

Will it feel crunchy or flaky?

It dries to a light cast, which is what holds the curl. Scrunch it out once your hair is fully dry. Use less on fine hair.

Can I use it on wavy hair?

It is made for curly and coily hair. Waves do better with the Curl Cream alone, because heavier products pull waves straight.

How often should I use it?

At every wash, as your last styling step. It is optional.

Expert panel judged panthenol and pantothenic acid safe in cosmetics

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel judged panthenol and pantothenic acid safe as used in cosmetics, where they act as hair conditioners and humectants.

Flaxseed gel is mostly arabinoxylan with water-binding properties

A review found flaxseed mucilage is mainly an arabinoxylan plus an acidic pectin-like part, with water-binding and flow properties comparable to gum arabic.

In lab tests, panthenol entered hair and made fibres stronger

In human hair tested in the lab, labelled panthenol penetrated into the protein-rich core and raised break stress and stiffness, probably through hydrogen bonding.

The neutraliser changes how stiff a styling gel film feels

In lab tests on hair tresses, the neutraliser changed the gel film, plasticising or hardening it. Adhesion to hair and film cohesion both determined stiffness and curl retention in high humidity.

Silk protein and linseed treatment kept bleached hair stronger

On bleached and coloured hair swatches, a silk-protein plus linseed-polysaccharide treatment gave better tensile resistance and luster after bleach and colour.

Hair absorbs more water as the air gets more humid

Hair water uptake rose in a straight line as humidity went from 40 to 85%. A humidity-resistance measure based on hair elasticity ranked four shampoo polymers for anti-frizz, with polyquaternium-70 best.
