Lanolin
A sheep-wool wax used as an emollient in pomades and conditioners; a weak but real contact allergen whose true allergy rate is probably under-detected.
What it is
Lanolin is a complex mixture of high-molecular-weight esters, alcohols, sterols, fatty acids and hydrocarbons that has been used for centuries as an emollient. Purified and derivative forms exist (Jenkins 2023). In styling it appears in pomades and hair dressings. Polyether lanolin derivatives work mainly as conditioners and emulsifiers (Becker 2018). See styling products explained.
How it works
It leaves a sticky, water-repellent film that softens and seals the surface. No hair-specific measurement was found.
What the studies show
- A review calls lanolin a weak sensitiser, with contact allergy of about 0.4% in the European population. Risk is higher with atopic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis and leg ulcers, and some people who test positive tolerate it on normal skin (Jenkins 2023).
- In 286 patients patch-tested prospectively, lanolin allergy was 1.05% on the standard series, 3.85% on a cosmetic series and 6.29% when any of three series was positive. The standard test can miss it (Miest 2013).
- A safety review of 39 polyether lanolins judged them safe as used (Becker 2018).
- Safety data are reasonably good. Hair benefit data are absent.
How it's used in studies
Patch-test concentrations were lanolin alcohol 30% in petrolatum and Amerchol L101 50% in petrolatum (Miest 2013).
Side effects and safety
Contact dermatitis occurs in a minority, and the standard patch test can miss it. Avoid lanolin if you have a confirmed allergy. People with eczema or atopic dermatitis are at higher risk. It is animal-derived, so it is not vegan.
Bottom line
A rich sealing agent for very dry, coarse or textured hair when used sparingly. Skip it if your scalp is eczema-prone. We are moderately confident about safety and not about hair benefit.
Fun facts
Standard lanolin-alcohol patch tests diagnosed allergy in about 1% of patients in a 286-person clinic series. Adding derivative tests raised that to 6.3% (Miest 2013).
