WEIGHT LOSS
Weight loss and hair shedding
In short
Fast weight loss is a known shedding trigger. GLP-1 shot users had about three times the hair-loss risk of placebo, and hair loss after weight-loss surgery is common. It usually fades. Talk to your prescriber before changing any medicine.
Do this
-
1
Expect shedding about 2 to 5 months after fast weight loss starts.
-
2
Do not stop a prescribed medicine over shedding; talk to your prescriber.
-
3
Ask your doctor about ferritin, zinc and folate tests if losing weight fast.
-
4
Supplement only what a test shows is low.
-
5
What the science points to: fixing low ferritin, zinc, folate may help (likelihood: medium).
-
6
Talk to a doctor if the part keeps widening after your weight settles.
The numbers behind it
-
3.25x
Hair-loss risk with GLP-1 shots versus placebo, in 9 studies and 4,114 users. About 3.9% of users had hair loss.
-
57%
Had hair loss after weight-loss surgery, pooled across 18 studies and 2,538 people. It fell with longer follow-up.
-
25-50%
Resting hairs in nine people who lost 11.7 to 24.75 kg on strict diets. Shedding began 2 to 5 months after starting.
-
Lower
Ferritin and vitamin D in people with diffuse shedding than in controls, pooled from 29 studies.
For your hair
On a GLP-1 shot
About 4 in 100 users had hair loss in trials. Talk to your prescriber; do not stop the drug on your own.
After weight-loss surgery
Hair loss was more common in younger women and in people with low zinc, folic acid or ferritin. It fell with time.
Crash dieters
Shedding followed strict diets by a few months, and hair regrew within months in nine people studied.
Already thinning
A shed can make pattern loss easier to see. See the shedding guide to tell them apart.
Why we suggest fixing low levels
Fast weight loss is the shared trigger, and low zinc, folic acid and ferritin went with hair loss after surgery. Test before you supplement.
Myths to ignore
-
Myth Hair loss on a weight-loss shot is permanent.
Truth Studies describe shedding tied to fast weight loss. After surgery it fell with longer follow-up; crash dieters regrew within months.
Zhang 2021 ↗ -
Myth Biotin prevents diet-related shedding.
Truth A review found no high-quality support for biotin as a hair supplement. Low zinc, folic acid and ferritin went with loss after surgery.
Yelich 2024 ↗ -
Myth Shedding starts right away.
Truth In crash dieters it began 2 to 5 months after starting the diet.

Go deeper
- Diet and hairCrash diets and rapid weight loss cause shedding, ordinary diets rarely do, and testing beats guessing before you buy supplements.
- Drug-induced hair changesMedicines can thin hair, regrow it curly, darken or whiten it, or lengthen lashes; this table sorts the best-known links by how strong the evidence is.
- Telogen effluviumA temporary burst of diffuse shedding that starts 2 to 3 months after a physical or emotional shock and usually settles within 6 months once the trigger is gone; it does not cause bald patches.
- The hair growth cycleEvery scalp follicle cycles through growth, shutdown, rest and release on its own clock, which explains normal shedding, seasonal changes, maximum length and how pattern hair loss works.
