Gray hair and premature graying

Graying is mostly genetic, but single-hair mapping shows some gray hairs can regain colour, and the famous stress-causes-gray mechanism has only been proven in mice.

Key takeaways

  • Graying is mainly genetic and age-driven: in a survey of 6,390 Korean men under 30, a family history of early graying had an odds ratio of 12.8 for premature graying. Shin 2015
  • Hair colour is made in the follicle while a hair grows. A hair that has grown out gray cannot change; only a new growth cycle can come back pigmented.
  • Graying is not always one-way. A 2021 single-hair study found gray and white segments that regained pigment, some in step with reported life stress. The study was small. Rosenberg 2021
  • Stress can cause graying in mice by overactivating nerves that deplete pigment stem cells. Whether this explains human graying is unproven. Zhang 2020
  • Smoking, obesity and low ferritin or vitamin B12 are associated with early graying in observational studies; none proves that fixing the factor reverses graying.
  • No topical or oral product has good human evidence for reversing graying (see catalase supplements, PABA, luteolin).
  • Some drugs cause unexpected repigmentation (see drug-induced hair changes).

The science

Hair colour comes from pigment cells (melanocytes) in the hair bulb that pass melanin to the growing hair. A 2024 review describes graying as the combined result of accumulated oxidative and DNA damage, excess mTORC1 signalling, pigment-cell ageing and too few pigment-promoting factors in the bulb. It becomes irreversible only when the pigment stem cells in the bulge are also depleted, which happens later. Paus 2024

Stress. In mice, acute stress triggered noradrenaline release from sympathetic nerves around the pigment stem-cell niche; the stem cells multiplied, matured and migrated out, leaving permanent depletion and gray hair. Adrenal stress hormones and immune attack were not needed. Zhang 2020 In people, Rosenberg and colleagues measured pigment along single hairs and found gray hairs that regained colour across sexes, ethnicities and ages; in a few donors the graying and reversal tracked self-reported stress. This does not prove that stress management reverses graying. Rosenberg 2021

Observational risk factors for early graying (all associations only):

  • 25.3% of 6,390 Korean men under 30 had premature graying; family history OR 12.82, obesity OR 2.61, more than 5 pack-years of smoking OR 1.61. Questionnaire-based, men only. Shin 2015
  • In 207 people, smokers were about 2.5 times as likely to gray before 30, and started graying about 3 years earlier. Zayed 2013
  • In a case-control study of 240 people in North India, early graying went with atopy, family history, smoking, perceived stress and lower calcium, ferritin, vitamin B12 and HDL. Sharma 2018
  • In 74 people in Bengaluru, ferritin, B12 and HDL were lower in those who grayed before 25. Chakrabarty 2016

Small single-clinic studies cannot say whether low ferritin or B12 cause graying or just travel with diet and other factors.

What the studies show (newer, early)

  • A 2026 letter reported gray hair repigmentation in people with pattern hair loss taking oral minoxidil; we read only the record, not the data. Fernández-Crehuet 2026
  • A 2026 paper describes tyrosinase-loaded nanocapsules that reversed graying in animal work; we read only the record. Li 2026
  • A 2026 review updates the field but does not change the picture above. Ramirez-Gomez 2026

Myths and facts

  • Fact: some gray hairs regrow pigmented, documented in single-hair mapping.
  • Fact: smoking is repeatedly linked with earlier graying, but this is association.
  • Fact: low ferritin, B12 and calcium appear in case-control studies; correcting a genuine deficiency is reasonable for other reasons, but repigmentation is not guaranteed.
  • Be skeptical of "reverse gray" supplement claims.

Bottom line

Graying is mostly inherited and cosmetic coverage (colour, root touch-ups, glosses) is the only reliable way to change the look. Sudden graying in a young person with fatigue, weight change or other symptoms is a reason to check thyroid, ferritin and B12 with a doctor. Stopping smoking has many benefits, though whether it slows graying is not shown.
