Beards and eyebrows

Beard preferences depend on context and what is fashionable, even beards beat patchy ones, and cosmetic options such as minoxidil for beards and microblading for brows rest on small studies.

brows lashes beard

This page covers how facial hair is perceived, how to shape and groom it, and cosmetic options. Treatments for brow and lash loss are on the bimatoprost and latanoprost pages.

Key takeaways

  • Beard preferences depend on context and on what is common. Full beards and heavy stubble were rated better for long-term relationships by 8,520 women, and a beard softened the penalty of very masculine or very feminine faces (Dixson 2016). Beards and clean-shaven looks were each rated more attractive when rare (Janif 2014). No beard is "best", and fashion cycles are the real rule.
  • Even, connected beards beat patchy ones in women's ratings of men's sexual attractiveness (Dixson & Rantala 2016). If your beard grows patchy, short stubble or a clean shave probably reads better than a sparse beard. That is an inference, not a tested result.
  • Men like beards on themselves more than on other men. In a survey of both sexes, women's stated preference was ambiguous (Jach & Moron 2020).
  • Eyebrows matter for recognition and expression. Removing brows from celebrity photos hurt recognition more than removing the eyes (Sadr 2003). Keep strong brows visible rather than hidden by a fringe (see haircuts and face shape).
  • Arched brows were the most preferred shape in a 652-person online image ranking, more strongly when judging women's faces than men's (Richer 2023).
  • Topical minoxidil can thicken beard growth, off-label. A 2016 randomised, double-masked trial tested minoxidil 3% lotion for beard enhancement (Ingprasert 2016). It is a letter without a PubMed abstract, so we do not quote its numbers. A 2025 systematic review of 19 randomised trials concluded low-dose minoxidil is effective for facial hair enhancement, with most trials at some risk of bias (Almutairi 2025). It is not approved for beards in the US, EU or UK. See minoxidil.
  • Beards give a little sun protection, not much. The UV protection factor of beards and moustaches ranged from 2 to 21 and was lowest around midday sun angles (Parisi 2012). Still wear sunscreen.
  • Shaving has real skin risks. Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) are a chronic follicle inflammation that is more common in men of African and Asian descent, triggered by shaving or plucking, and stopping shaving usually resolves it (Ogunbiyi 2019). Spanish dermatologists also reported 107 cases (106 male) of scalp and face ringworm linked to shaved haircuts, mostly Trichophyton tonsurans (Bascon 2023), so clean tools matter.

What the studies show

Perception of facial hair

Study Year Design n Main result
Dixson et al. 2016 Women rate men's faces, masculinity by beard 8,520 Full beard and heavy stubble raised long-term attractiveness; beards offset the penalty at the masculinity extremes
Dixson & Rantala 2016 Rated facial and body hair distribution women Even, connected facial hair preferred
Janif et al. 2014 Photos varying how common each style was raters Rarer styles rated more attractive, which explains fashion cycles
Jach & Moron 2020 Survey of both sexes n/a Preferences differ by sex; men like their own beards

A 2014 US poll found 62% of women found well-kept beards attractive and 30% unattractive. Its methods were not shown.

Eyebrows

  • Brow position changes perceived eye size and expression, and brows carry identity (Sadr 2003).
  • Shape preference: Richer 2023 edited images into five shapes (arched, head-up, horizontal, rounded, tail-up). The arched shape was preferred overall but not in every subgroup, and the authors advise discussing shape with the individual. Black respondents were under-represented.
  • No study has shown that brow grooming changes real-world outcomes. Thick, natural, softly groomed brows are a stylist convention.

Cosmetic procedures for brows and beards

  • Microblading deposits pigment into the superficial dermis with a manual blade. Results are semi-permanent, lasting about 12 to 18 months, and the review notes more side effects as untrained operators multiply (Marwah 2021). A case report describes a delayed granulomatous reaction (Leight-Dunn 2022).
  • Hair transplantation to brows or beard exists (see hair transplant) and is out of scope here.

Hygiene

In a small study of 20 surgeons (10 bearded, 10 clean-shaven), beards did not increase bacterial shedding while masked (Parry 2016). It is a niche, tiny study and does not say a beard is "clean".

What it means by hair profile

  • Curl pattern 3B to 4C facial hair: curly beard hairs can re-enter the skin when shaved, raising razor-bump risk (Ogunbiyi 2019). Consider a trimmer at a longer setting, or growing out.
  • Patchy beard growth: short stubble or a defined shorter beard looks more even. Minoxidil is the only studied topical option, off-label.
  • Fine or low-density head hair: a groomed beard can balance a thinning top. This is stylist practice and untested.
  • Gray beards: greying reads as age (see hair colour for looks). No beard-specific study.
  • Sensitive or dry skin: beard dandruff and itch respond to gentle cleansing and moisturiser. That is stylist practice, and we opened no study on it.

Myths and facts

  • Myth: women prefer beards. Fact: it depends on the woman, the context and how common beards are.
  • Myth: beards are dirty. Fact: one small surgeon study found no extra bacterial shedding with a mask.
  • Fact: clippers and razors at barbershops need disinfecting. Ringworm clusters followed shaved haircuts.

Practical recommendations

  1. Pick a beard length your growth supports. Even coverage beats length, and patchy growth is often better short.
  2. Keep necklines and cheek lines clean. A tidy outline reads as intentional.
  3. Keep strong brows visible. Tidy stray hairs only, and avoid over-plucking because regrowth is slow and unpredictable.
  4. For microblading or brow tattoos, use a trained, licensed technician and sterile single-use blades, and expect fading. Check local rules.
  5. Use sunscreen on exposed skin even with a beard.
  6. Ask your barber how tools are disinfected.

Bottom line

Beard and brow advice rests on decent but fashion-dependent photo ratings and small studies of cosmetic procedures. Even coverage and tidy edges are the safest choices. Minoxidil for beards is off-label and microblading is a tattoo procedure. Discuss with a doctor.
