Pyrilutamide
A topical androgen blocker from the Chinese company Kintor that reported positive pivotal results in China; no peer-reviewed efficacy paper yet.
What it is
Pyrilutamide is a topical, non-steroidal androgen receptor blocker developed by Suzhou Kintor for male pattern hair loss (and acne). It is not approved anywhere and is not for sale as a medicine. A Chinese filing has been described as upcoming but we could not confirm one. Any "pyrilutamide" sold online is unregulated.
What the studies show
All results are company-reported; we found no peer-reviewed efficacy paper and could not verify the earlier phase 2 results.
- China pivotal trial, phase II stage (90 men, 24 weeks): 0.5% and 1.0% tincture twice daily vs placebo. Non-vellus hair count in the target area rose 22.39 (0.5%) and 21.87 (1.0%) per cm² vs 8.73 on placebo, a difference of about 13 hairs/cm² (p = 0.002 and 0.004). Investigator ratings also favoured the drug, and it was reported as well tolerated. NCT06126965
- Pivotal phase 3 (740 men planned): trade press in March 2026 reported that the primary endpoint was met, but we could not open the data. NCT06126965
- Earlier phase 2 trials in men (about 120 each) and women (160): the registry shows completion only; results were not verified. NCT05218642
Side effects and safety
The company reports satisfactory tolerability and low absorption through the skin. There are no independent safety data.
Bottom line
Watch for peer-reviewed phase 3 results and a Chinese approval decision; a US or EU approval is not imminent, and the roughly 13 hairs/cm² effect is a company figure that needs independent confirmation. This assessment is provisional. Discuss with a doctor.
